On the morning of Saturday, February 28, Israeli and American armed forces carried out a series of strikes against Iran, resulting in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. The strikes hit sites of power in the capital, Tehran, as well as other strategic locations in the west and south of the country early Saturday morning.
On Saturday evening, the Iranian Red Crescent reported more than 200 dead and 747 wounded in 24 of the country’s 31 provinces as a result of the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel.
In retaliation, Iran launched volleys of missiles toward Israel, where dozens of explosions were heard in the sky as Israeli military interception systems were activated. Throughout the day on Saturday, Tehran also targeted US military bases in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. In Bahrain, the home port of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet was also targeted.
The US military operates numerous bases in the region and maintains a presence at several other sites.
