The rebellion has started to look like a genuine generational war. Progressive youth organizations in the United States have become increasingly critical of Democratic Party leaders and are determined to make their voices heard. At the heart of their frustration is the party’s tendency to always prioritize experience – or, depending on one’s perspective, advanced age – when selecting candidates.

The latest battleground is in Maine, where, in mid-October, the six main Democratic youth organizations took on the party leadership. They issued a statement of support for Graham Platner, 41, a left-wing populist and candidate for the 2026 Senate election, on the very same day Janet Mills launched her candidacy.

The state’s governor, age 77, was favored by the Democratic establishment and especially by New York Senator and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, 74.

“Donald Trump and his MAGA [Make America Great Again] cronies are an active result of the failed priorities of the people who came before us. We cannot expect a different ending when we keep on writing the same story,” said Sunjay Muralitharan, president of the College Democrats of America – the main Democratic student association and co-signatory of the statement – which claims over 100,000 members across the country.
