Nothing now seems too grand for United States President Donald Trump. The American president increasingly sees himself as a global architect of peace and prosperity, positioning himself as the head of an “international organization” intended to surpass the delays – and at times the paralysis – of the United Nations.
After announcing the second phase of his Gaza peace plan on Saturday, January 17, the White House invited around 60 countries to join the “board of peace,” a central part of the program adopted in October 2025 after the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Initially, this board was meant to support the Palestinian administration by orchestrating reconstruction and economic development in the enclave devastated by war. Approved under a mandate from the UN Security Council in November 2025, its role was to remain limited to Gaza and to conclude in 2027.
However, its charter, leaked to the press, shows that the American president has revised his ambitions. The body is being assigned a task “to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict.” Trump’s underlying goal is clear: to sideline the UN, which he holds in contempt. “Lamenting that too many approaches to peace-building foster perpetual dependency, and institutionalize crisis rather than leading people beyond it,” the American president suggests having “the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed.” Gaza is not mentioned anywhere in the document.
