After Poland, Romania, Lithuania and Denmark, Germany and Belgium have now reported suspicious drone flyovers as well. On the morning of Friday, October 3, VRT, the Flemish public radio and television broadcaster, announced that about 15 drones had flown over the Elsenborn military base, located in the German-speaking part of Belgium near the German border. The information was quickly confirmed by the office of Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken. Authorities stated that an “assessment of the situation” was underway.
The drones were spotted at around 1:45 am above the base, a 28-kilometer area where live-fire exercises and ground troop training usually take place. An anti-drone detection drill was apparently underway last night when the aircraft were sighted. The drones were also visible across the border, above the city of Düren in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Questioned on Wednesday about drone activity in various parts of Denmark, Minister Theo Francken noted that his country was likely not prepared to handle such situations if flyovers were to occur above Brussels-Zaventem Airport, for example.
