The Israeli army killed 104 Palestinians, including 46 children, within a few hours during the night of Tuesday, October 28, in the Gaza Strip, despite the ceasefire that has been in place since October 10. By the end of the day on Wednesday, the Israeli army stated that the truce had resumed.

But is that deadly episode truly over? And is it possible to still speak of a ceasefire? Ten Israeli airstrikes targeted eastern Khan Yunis at dawn on Thursday, where two people were killed in the Sultans neighborhood in Beit Lahiya. Since the October 10 agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered by the United States, there have been around 200 Palestinian casualties. The Israeli army is still obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid and still refuses to open the Rafah crossing at the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip.

In this context, Israel’s attack on Wednesday – justified by the death of an Israeli reservist and the slow process of returning hostages’ bodies by Hamas – only highlighted the lack of meaningful pressure to fully uphold the truce. So much so that US Vice President JD Vance described the breaches of the ceasefire as “little skirmishes here and there.”
